Education Committee News and Information

Updated February 2008

Welcome to the updated Cypress Landing Yacht Club web site.  The Education committee will continue to keep you informed with timely and useful information on boating safety and education.

Programs Being Planned for 2008:

Schedules for 2008 activities have not yet been finalized.  This is our current plan:

§        April:

  • Learn to Sail – a 2 hour classroom introduction to sailing followed by a hands on sail with some Cypress Landing sailors to test out your newly learned skills.

  • Coast Guard – A presentation by Cypress landing resident Tom Omri (retired Coast Guard)

  • Boating Safety Inspection Program – Conducted by local Power Squadron members, this Coast Guard sponsored program will give you a no risk inspection of your boat’s ability to meet the Coast Guard’s safety requirements.

§        May:

  • Pacific Sea Craft – Presentation by Steve Brody, president of Pacific Sea Craft.

  • Boating Safety Inspection Program – Repeat of the April program during “Safe Boating Week”.

New Things:

  •  Two new Rules of the Road articles from “Capt’n Ed’s Files”.

  1.  Situation #5” – Barge hit railroad as tug maneuvers to avoid hitting sailboat

  2. Situation #6” – Tug-barge hit pleasure boat anchored in channel.

We encourage anyone interested to send information on their favorite spots.  Also, send pictures and specifics (e.g., “don’t anchor on the south side due to stumps”) on any of the sports presented by Gray to (wsholl@suddenlink.net)

  •

    •  New Slipholder Orientation –In cooperation with the Marina dockmaster, the Education Committee will be holding periodic orientations for new slip-holders.  The program addresses:

    1.  Marina Rules and Regulations

    2.   Maintenance fees

    3.  The organizational structure of the HOA / Marina / Yacht Club – and how each impacts the boating community.

    4.  Marina facilities

    >>>>>>  If you have questions on this topic or would like to attend an orientation, contact Bob Graves in the dockmasters office.
